Things are probably finally calming down a bit for Louie Krogman and Co. at White River after the senior guard managed to break the all-time South Dakota high school boys basketball scoring record.The modest Krogman and his coach, Eldon Marshall, spoke briefly the day before he broke the record about what a relief it would be to get beyond the hoopla surrounding the former’s record-breaking run. That being said, the stage what better stage could Louie have had than the Lakota Nation Invitational to show off his skills and break the record.Even if Louie had broken the record at a high profile tournament such as the state tournament or any other handful of early season tourneys, he wouldn’t have received near the warm welcome and heartfelt recognition that he did at the LNI. Sure, they probably would have stopped the game and given him the ball, but Louie’s record breaking point — which came on a free throw Thursday — was cheered on by thousands of die-hard basketball enthusiasts that not only stopped the game, but showered him with gifts, including a personalized jacket and handmade blanket. The fact that he broke the record west of the Missouri is simply icing on the cake.Bryan Brewer and the organizers of the LNI deserve their own round of applause for presenting such a great stage for not only this record-breaking achievement, but a week of spectacular high school sports, extra curricular games and, most of all, a great sense of community.

In this time of bad sports news with Michael Vick, Pacman Jones and the Mitchel report on the rampant use of steroids in the MLB, I decided it was time to talk about some local positives.

If you didn’t already know, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is being held in Las Vegas this week. This is the cowboys/cowgirls Super Bowl. The top 15 money winners in each event get to compete in this 10 round championship. In the sport of rodeo, there are no big salaried, multi-year, guaranteed money contracts. Not much for agents. If you’re not competing and winning, you’re not making any money. Today’s price of fuel isn’t helping either. Most of the competitors that reach the Finals have barely broken even for the year and what they win in Vegas is the only positive income they put on their tax return.

I bring all of this up because South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Nebraska have some of the best cowboys/cowgirls in the world. There are seven contestants at the WNFR each from South Dakota and Wyoming, three from Montana and two from Nebraska. Some of them haven’t had much luck this year, but some of them are doing very well and in the running to win a World Championship (Super Bowl Ring).

One of the most impressive performances is coming from steer wrestler Jason Miller from Lance Creek, WY. Miller came into the NFR in 13th place with earnings of $62,334. So far this week he has won $67,428 and moved up to 3rd place in the World Standings and is leading the average, or aggregate, that would pay another $42,000. I almost held off writing this as I’d hate to jinx Miller, but hey, cowboys aren’t superstitious at all. Yeah right.

Also in the hunt in the steer wrestling average is Sean Mulligan. He has won three rounds and placed fourth in one round and is less than one second behind Miller in the average. Mulligan now resides in Coleman, OK but used to traipse around South Dakota and Nebraska.

Finally in the steer wrestling watch Todd Suhn from North Platte, NE. He has placed third twice and second once. I bring up these three steer wrestlers as they were all teammates at the same time for the University of Wyoming rodeo team in the mid 90’s. UW has turned out a number of good steer wrestlers, most of which came from Harding County South Dakota including Birch Negaard and some of the Gilbert clan to name a few.

Obviously there are a number of other local heroes at the WNFR this year from places like Highmore, SD, Belt, MT, Camp Crook, SD, Oelrichs, SD, Belvidere, SD, Letcher, SD and Carpenter, WY. Most of these places are official towns with nothing more than a bar and a post office and a population less than 50 people.

These athletes names won’t pop up on front page of USA Today or on the ESPN home page for things like dog fighting, night club or strip club shootings and assaults, or their abuse of anabolic steroids. These are hard working individuals that will look you in the eye and their hand shake is as good as any contract. Not that they don’t like to go out and tie one on every now and then, but they respect others and their property. These are some of your superstars, be proud and supportive of them.

I a dual between two of the best Class A wrestling squads in South Dakota, Rapid City Stevens edged perennial powerhouse Sturgis 34-32, and the Raiders used a slightly unusual strategy to lock up the win.
Up 34-23 and with the 215 pound match between Raider Josh Braband and Scooper Jake Stygles tied at 4-4, Stevens coach Brian Moser instructed Braband to give up a free escape with seconds left in the match. Moser said if the match had gone into OT, it was possible that Braband — wrestling in his first varisty match of the season — could have been pinned, and the Raiders would’ve lost the match.
In sports circles, it’s called taking one for the team. In basketball, it might be committing a foul and fouling out but preventing a star player from the opponent from getting to the basket. Or in baseball, laying down a sacrifice bunt to move a baserunner along. And although wrestling is at times as much an individual sport as a team sport, what Braband did is great to see.
But not everyone agrees with my assessment. On Rapid Reply for the story, at least one reader thought it improperly tarnished Braband’s record.
“Tear him down?” wrote: ” I find it hard to believe that a coach would ask a kid to take a dive. Especially when he is just starting his varsity wresting career. Doesn’t do much for the kid’s confidence especially when he was holding onto a 4-4 tie. I know this was a dual and not individual but it still goes on his record. Kind of sad that’s all. “

It was close to the end but powerhouse Bismarck High School claimed the Rapid City Invitational Wrestling tournament title over Gillette on a snowy Saturday afternoon.
The top five teams were Bismarck 210.5, Gillette 204.5, Rapid City Stevens 178, Sturgis 153.5 and Huron 153.
Local individual champions included Josh Keszler of Sturgis (125), Jarrett Jensen of Stevens (145), Brian Schultz of Belle Fourxhe (171), Lincoln Smith of Philip (189) and Kyle Blake of Belle Fourche 215.
