Brookings wins boys 1,600 relay; Central finishes third

Rapid City Central concluded the day with a third place finish in the Class AA boys 1,600 relay. The Cobblers turned in a time of 3:31.54.
Brookings won the AA title and the gold medal with a time of 3:28.30. Sioux Falls Lincoln finished second in 3:30.69.
Spearfish ended up fifth followed by Pierre in sixth.

Custer finished seventh and Hill City eighth in the Class A race. The Wildcats combined for a time of 3:37.35 while the Rangers finished in 3:37.78.
Dell Rapids won the relay with a time of 3:29.42.

Hanson turned in the fastest time in Class B. The Beavers ran in 3:34.81 followed by Highmore-Harrold in second with a time of 3:37.38.

St. Thomas More wins final event of the day

St. Thomas More clocked a season-best time en route to a championship title in the Class A girls 1,600 relay.
The relay team, consisting of Gail McIntyre, Katy Freidel, Carrie Maguire and Annie Bloom, turned in a time of 4:10.37 just ahead of Elkton at 4:10.74.
Winner finished fourth with a time of 4:13.79.

The Watertown team of Leslie Brost, Tia Hemiller, Carissa Hauck and Brittany Page won the AA race in a gold medal winning time of 3:59.64. Rapid City Stevens took second in 4:04.72. Spearfish ended up fifth, 4:12.91, and R.C. Central finished eighth, 4:19.60.

In the Class B race, Colman-Egan defended their relay title with a time of 4:09.86, well ahead of Rosholt, 4:13.25. The Hawk team consisting of Carly Merges, Meggie Huglid, Paige Nelson and Jill Fritz set the state record at the 2006 state meet.
Faith finished seventh in the 1,600 relay at 4:21.12.

Klinger, DeMers champions in 200

Pierre’s Jarrett Klinger and Winner’s Chas DeMers each added another sprinting title to their state meet experience as each won the 200-meter dash in their respective classes.

Klinger won the AA race in :22.30. Lucas Thompson of Sioux Falls Lincoln came in second with 22.56. Rapid City Stevens’ Tim Brown took third in a time of 22.83.
Central’s Andrew Johnson finished fifth, 23.07, and Luke Lewis took seventh, 23.30.

DeMers, a senior, held off Bennett County’s Corbin Kratovil to take the Class A race. DeMers clocked :21.82 for the win while Kratovil finished in :22.53.

Newley Kartak won the ‘B’ title in :22.80. Derek Miles of Montrose finished second in :22.81 while Mark Sayler of Scotland took third, :22.88.
Jones County’s Jordan Miller finished fifth with a time of 23.09. Nathan Kraft of Timber Lake came in eighth in 24.05 seconds.

DeMers earned the gold medal in the event defeating Klinger, who won the 100-meter medal by a tenth of a second.

King wins 200, captures fourth title

Jasmyne King clinched her fourth championship title in the girls 200-meter dash.
The Rapid City Central runner clocked a time of 24.79 holding off Watertown’s Brittany Page, 25.28. The win also marks King’s fourth gold medal.
Becca Bedard of Rapid City Stevens finished fourth in 25.52 while teammate Emily DeVries grabbed seventh, 26.42.
Cobbler junior Rachel Nilles took the eighth spot with a time of 26.78.

Alicia Brown of Vermillion narrowly defeated Alexa Duling of Gregory in the Class A race.
Brown turned in a time of 25.38 while Duling was clocked at 25.44. Winner’s Shalena Meyer finished third with a time of 26.42.

Faulkton’s Chanesse Schaefer claimed the Class B title with a time of 26.46 seconds. Faith’s Brianna Lemmel came in fourth at :26.91. Carmen Hirsch of Highmore-Harrold finished in :28.07 to take eighth place.

Pierre, Custer take boys medley titles

Pierre and Custer topped their respective classes in the boys medley relay.
The Governors at 3:35.96 turned in the fastest time of all three classes. The team consisted of Jarrett Klinger, Cameron Rogers, Sean Melmer and Travis Fitzke.
Rapid City Central came in fourth with a time of 3:41.31. Stevens finished seventh in 3:47.69 and Sturgis collected eighth place at 3:47.88.
Custer ran a season-best 3:39.10 en route to the Class A title. The foursome included Darin Smith, Michael Heyne, Jesse Black and Jared Foote. Elk Point-Jefferson took second in 3:41.81.
Todd County finished eighth in 3:49.84.
Hitchcock-Tulare wrapped up the Class B race in 3:48.94 with Hanson following a close second, 3:49.93. The Patriot relay team was made up by Connor Skaare, Nate Peterson, Koey Britton and Ryan Huizenga.

Sturgis wins AA girls medley relay

Sturgis turned in the fastest time in the Class AA girls medley relay to grab the AA title.
The Scooper foursome of Nikki Watson, McKenzi Keffler, Carsey Barden and Terra Potts posted a time of 4:15.35. Their performance also earned them the gold medal.          Pierre finished sixth in 4:25.03.

Sioux Valley pulled off a close win over St. Thomas More in the Class A medley relay. The Cossacks finished in 4:28.00 with the Cavaliers trailing by only nine-tenths of a second.
Winner took seventh place in a time of 4:41.73.

Gayville-Volin’s medley relay team earned the ‘B’ title with Emma Erickson, the Class B girls 800 champion, anchoring the team. The Raiderettes, consisting of Katie Hirsch, Morgan Erickson, Jessica Hirsch and Emma Erickson, turned in a time of 4:23.69.
Colman-Egan came in second at 4:30.67.

King wins AA long jump for third title of the day

Jasmyne King of Rapid City Central collected her third championship title of the final day of the state meet in the long jump.
King, a freshman, recorded a jump of 17-10.5 to win the title over crosstown rival Stevens Raider Mikayla Anderson, 17-5.5.
Kayla Gosnell of Stevens finished with a distance of 16-0.75 and teammate Ali Papendick went 15-6. Cobbler Ehrin Fuhrman jumped 14-10.5.
