Big Fly from the MVP oh Yeah!!!

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

        Badda Bing!!!

 images4.jpg

It was “Oh Canada” night at the Metrodome on Thursday night as the reigning AL MVP blasted a walk-off homer in the 9th as the Twins pulled out a 3-2 win over the D-Rays.

Carlos “Chief” Silva pitched 6-2/3 scoreless innings to lower his era to .077 after two starts….

What made the win even sweeter was the Twins, after blowing a 2-0 lead, got an improbable 9-4-2-6 double play…

In other news of interest, the Twins unveiled thier plans for the new ballpark set to open in 2010.

6-3 with a 153 games to play!!!

Pro hockey IS coming to Rapid City

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

It’s not if, it’s when and who.

What do you think about R.C. getting another professional sports team? How will they fare? Is Rapid City ready for a hockey team? Is anyone interested in hockey?

For complete details on the Central Hockey League, go to Thursday’s Journal story at http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2007/04/12/news/top/news02.txt. The USHL is scheduled to visit on April 24, as one of those leagues (the CHL or the USHL) will probably get a team in Rapid City. Which one do you want?

Zach Johnson is the “Master”

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

Zach Johnson, a golfer from Iowa who had one career PGA Tour win entering the Masters, won the prestigious event Sunday thanks in part to some clutch play down the stretch. It’s nice to see a “no-name” player win a major every once in a while.

Johnson, playing two groups behind the lead group, fired a 69 at Augusta National Golf Club during the final round to win by two with a 1-over 289 total.

Tiger Woods (72) Rory Sabbatini (69) and Retief Goosen (69) tied for second at 3-over 291.

Woods had some chances down the stretch, however, he had to settle for pars on his final five holes. Woods is a four-time Masters champion and has 12 majors overall.

Goosen (left) and Sabbatini (right) joined Johnson with fourth-round lows of 69. But, neither could get over the hump.

Woods (left) and Stuart Appleby played in the final pairing. Appleby, the leader entering the fourth round, shot a final-round 75 for a 5-over 293 total, putting him in a tie for seventh.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson (top left) had a triple-bogey on hole No. 1 and ended up 10 shots back in a tie for 24th. Vijay Singh (top right) and Jim Furyk (middle) wound up seven shots off the pace in a tie for 13th.

Jerry Kelly grinded it out and closed with a round of 70. He tied for fifth at 4-over 292.

Fred Couples, pictured here during Friday’s second round, made his 23rd consecutive cut at the Masters, tying the all-time tournament record. He made it right on the cut-line at 8-over 152 and finished in a tie for 30th at 13-over 301. Quite an accomplishment by the 1992 champion.

Hope the weekend finds everyone happy, healthy and relaxed this Easter.

  images3.jpg

Will Tiger find his groove to roar back at Augusta? Can a no-name hold on to put on the coveted green jacket?

Will the local high school’s golf, tennis and track teams finally get a meet or game in?

Will Ricky Williams get reinstated and if so does he get to play on grass (fields that is)?

Does anybody care who is going to make the playoffs in the NBA’s Western Conference besides P-Duff?

Will somebody please take Frank Thomas!!!

Thanks to everyone for working and replying to our blogs. We need to hear from you…

Stay bloggin, I’m off to win the Easter Egg Contest…

S.D. high school golf picks

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

For anyone interested, I have predicted the winners for the Spring 2007 golf season.

CLASS B girls: CLARK DOMINATION … Team–Clark wins despite a high score from its third player. Individual–Clark’s Ashley Kaufman won in 2004, sister Kimmy Kaufman won in 2005 and Ashley won again in 2006. This season, I’m taking Ashley, the senior, to win a close one over Kimmy, a sophomore.

CLASS A girls: DIGGIN’ THE GOLD … Team–Lead-Deadwood makes it 4 in a row. Individual–Golddigger Tara Hofer wins her third straight title. Her sister, Brittnay, won it all as a senior in 2004, before Tara took home the title in 2005 and 2006.

CLASS AA girls: THE BROOKINGS BOBCATS ARE SCARY … Team–Two-time defending-champion Brookings returns its top-4 scorers (senior Kati Scholten, last year’s champion; sophomore Morgan Fitts, fifth-place; junior Megan Selberg, eighth; and freshman Ashley Hendricks, tie-18th) from last season and is definitely going to win again. The Bobcats are young, but experienced, and have a good coach in Bill Scholten. Individual–(I’ll give you a top-5 here) 1, Kati Scholten, Brookings (repeat); 2, Paige Osterloo, Rapid City Stevens; 3, Morgan Fitts, Brookings; 4, Chelsea Cadwell, Sioux Falls Washington; 5, Jessica Lauer, Sturgis. [I know, it looks similar to the final leaderboard from last year, but that's the way it goes].

Class B boys: A WIDE-OPEN RACE, AGAIN … Team–Sioux Falls Christian returns its entire line-up from last season’s championship team. They’ll win by 7 or 8 strokes. Individual–I’m picking SFC’s Rainey Reynolds again, as he will edge defending champion Brian Bye (Gayville-Volin). Reynolds finished tied for sixth last year as a freshman.

[Note: I was recently informed by "Snoop" that Bye is no longer in high school. Sorry for the error.]

What do you all think?

New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur broke the single-season record for wins Thursday, picking up his 48th victory in a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The win also cliniched the Atlantic Division title for Jersey (49-24-8).

Brodeur, in his 14th NHL season, has 494 career wins, which is second on the all-time list. This season, he is No. 1 in wins (48) and shutouts (12), third in GAA (2.19) and fourth in save pct. (.921).

First weekend in MLB is here

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

How bout those Pittsburgh Pirates… Could this be the year?? Somewhere Pops Stargell and Roberto Clemente are smiling…

images2.jpg Slugging Xavier Nady of the unbeaten Pittsburg Pirates sends one deep in a win over Houston…

Grady Sizemore is on track for 162 homers, Dice-K gets his first MLB win and the Royals have been eliminated from the postseason (just kidding).  Maybe we should be eliminating last year’s champion St. Louis Cardinals, who are looking for their first win instead.

The Mets and Braves along with the TWINS are also 3-0….while Philadelphia, Houston, Texas and Baltimore are looking to put their first “W” on the board.

I know, I know, there is still a lot of baseball left, but you might want to start making your playoff and vacation plans right now!!!

Some interesting series this weekend…

The Twins playing the White Sox in Comisky… Carlos Silva and Sydney Ponson are set to pitch Friday and Saturday.. Hope there are enough baseballs left for Sunday’s game when  Johan “Cy”tana toes the rubber for the good guys!!!

The Astros and Cardinals will try to knock the train off the track as they play in Minute Maid park. The Cards already thin in the pitching department, will have to make due without thier ace Chris Carpenter (out with tightness in shoulder). While the Astros blue collar man, Craig Biggio plugs on towards 3,000 hits.

01.jpg

Biggio need 66 more hits to reach 3,000 in his career spent entirely with the Houston Astros.

Barry Bonds meanwhile, looks to splash a couple more into McCovey’s Cove as the Giants host the rival Dodgers.

Tom Glavine of the Mets, with 291 wins, will do battle against John Smoltz and the Braves on Saturday…

Yes the weather outside might be frightful, but with the RCJ’s MLB page at your door step every morning it’s all good!!!

Bennett County snubbed

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

WOW, Bennett County got snubbed on the Class A girls basketball all-state team. My congratulations go out to senior Maggie O’Neill and junior Keely Krolikowski for making the roster, but they deserve to be on the first team, not the second team.

O’Neill, who is one of the best all-around athletes in the state, averaged a double-double with 19.6 points and 11.8 rebounds. She also tallied five steals per game. Krolikowski got 21.8 points, 5.3 steals and four assists per contest.

Oh yeah, and by the way, the Lady Warriors also went 24-2 and finished second at the state tournament.

Great job picking the teams South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association.

Becky Hammon, WNBA

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

What do you think about Rapid City’s Becky Hammon getting traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars on draft day? She averaged 10.4 points per game during eight years with the New York Liberty, and was also an All-Star and an All-WNBA Second-Team performer. How will she fit in with her new team?

hammon.jpg

Also, how about SDSU’s Megan Vogel getting drafted 19th by the Washington Mystics. How do you think she will fare in the big league after a very successful career as a Jackrabbit?
