Stevens rolls to 2007 boys tennis team title
Saturday, May 19th, 2007Rapid City Stevens claimed eight of nine flight championships to claim its second consecutive team championship at the 2007 state boys tennis tournament in Sioux Falls on Saturday.
The Raiders easily outdistanced cross-state rival Sioux Falls O’Gorman for top honors. Stevens finished with 765 points. O’Gorman was second with 545-1/2 and Aberdeen Roncalli placed third with 475-1/2.
Pierre finished eighth with 315 points. Rapid City Central placed ninth with 259, Spearfish was 14th with 139, St. Thomas More 19th with 59 and Sturgis placed 20th with 25 points.
Winning singles championships for Stevens were Billy Paluch, who beat Brookings’ B.J. Flynn 6-3, 7-5 in Flight 1; Jack Hamburg, a 7-6 (2), 6-2 winner over Jameson Goetz of O’Gorman in Flight 2; Gib Moyle, who beat Roncalli’s Nick Ochsner 6-2, 6-4 in Flight 3; Cody Malik, who came from a set down to beat Paul Fahrendorf of O’Gorman 4-6, 6-4, 6-3; and J.J. Schultz, a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Pierre’s Stephen Bollinger.
In Flight 6, Raider senior Phil Henzlik was denied a chance to win both an individual state golf title and state singles title when he fell to Kevin Rance of O’Gorman 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. Henzlik ended up third after beating Spearfish’s Pat Hurst, 10-2.
In doubles, Paluch and Hamburg teamed up to beat Brookings’ Wade Kippley and B.J. Flynn 6-3, 6-2 in Flight 1; the Flight 2 title went to Moyle and Schultz after they beat Roncalli’s Nick Ochsner and Sean Solberg, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-1; Malik and Henzlik beat Kevin Oliver and J.D. Carrels of Roncalli 6-1, 6-1 for the Flight 3 title.
Cale Barber finished third for Central in Flight 2 singles by beating Roncalli’s Michael Zerr, 10-7. Dexter Lappe won the Flight 3 consolation championship by bettering Mitchell’s Sam Butterfield, 10-4.
