To let your inner freak out and dress how you would if no one cared.

I think Lewis Black had it right when he said halloween is for children… I would post the youtube link but there is some choice language that I don’t think would go over well… If your curious you can look it up on youtube its in his candy corn piece.

Get on the bus…

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

By Seth A. McConnell

Every once in a while you get one of those assignments that seems like it would be super simple but ends up being incredibly difficult. Today I got one of those. Take Rapid Ride and make photos to illustrate a story on the proposed rate increase.

Ride the bus, it sounds so simple. What I found out the hardway was people on the bus don’t want their picture taken. I rode the bus for nearly two hours taking the same route twice before I was able to make a single image that I could use. I sat in front of a young child on my second trip who was very curious and kept sticking his face between the seats with a big grin on his face. With the giant tinted windows and open door it provided the perfect light for a portrait and great light for a useable image for the story. Two outtakes.

The messiest photo shoot

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

This shoot was more of a mess than that time Dan the Tortilla Man let me throw flour on his face for the Business Journal cover. It was messier than the time I photographed bloody zombies for a Halloween party in San Francisco. It was even messier than having to trudge through waist-deep water and mud to shoot French Creek getting stocked.

A huge thank you to the theatre that loaned us the space to shoot our photo illustration on scary movies. And a big thank you to our photographer Seth McConnell who helped me round up some very willing volunteers for our models. Look for the scary movies story and photo in your paper on Halloween, October 31st. For now, here’s a preview of our incredible mess. I can now add “vacuumed theatre floor” to the list of things that I’ve done to get a photo.

This photo is an outtake from a shoot that I did yesterday at a daycare for a story about keeping kids active. The moment didn’t really fit into the edit, because I didn’t really feel like it said anything about outdoor activities or playtime at the daycare. But I liked this photo because of the expression on Ezra’s face and the subtlety of the other kid in the window.
