Springsteen: ‘Working on a Dream’

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

By Eric Lochridge

Out this week is Bruce Springsteen’s new album, “Working on a Dream.” Pre-release reviews led us to believe it might not be his best work, something of a toss-off. But Rolling Stone pegs it with a five-star rating.

I’m hot-and-cold when it comes to The Boss. Usually, I like him better without the E Street Band, and when he’s more acoustic. “We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions” is probably my favorite among his albums, and those aren’t even his songs. “Devils and Dust” was good but didn’t hold my attention long. And listening to the very early songs on “The Essential Springsteen” requires sincere, focused effort. In between are his megahit albums, such as “Born on the Fourth of July.”
So I’m always a little wary, although I respect whatever he presents us with.

Slow Monday: ‘Thriller’ planned for the stage

A stage version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”? Frightening, indeed.

From The Associated Press:

NEW YORK (AP) — “Thriller” a Broadway musical?

Producer James L. Nederlander says he has acquired the rights for a stage version of Michael Jackson’s iconic music-video spoof of horror films. The show will include songs from two of the pop king’s best-selling albums, “Thriller” and “Off the Wall.”

“The Nederlanders and Michael Jackson represent live theater and musical excellence, so let the music begin,” Tohme Tohme, a spokesman for Jackson, said Monday in a statement.

“I love the idea of making ‘Thriller’ a musical. Girl meets boy, they fall in love, boy has big secret, now what?” said Nederlander, head of the company that owns nine Broadway theaters.

No word yet on who will write the book for the show or what songs will be included in the production, or who will direct and choreograph.
