Support Our Dogs and Cats

By Andrew Gorder

I know there are a lot of thrash metal fans that are disappointed about not being able to catch the Lt. Dan Band this weekend, BUT as blog reader Beert pointed out earlier this week, the third annual “Punk Rock Rock for Puppies (and Kitties),” which will benefit the Humane Society for the Black Hills, will take place this Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Imperial Inn in Rapid City. The show will cost $6.

An unconfirmed list of bands scheduled to play follows: Dark Nation, Sonic Future, American Heavy Metal Weekend, Man of Straw, Corundum, Uncle Fester.

Your absence at this event will likely send a negative message to your pet, so you should go.

Rock revisionism

OK, I’m guessing we’ve all got albums that we swore we’d never get tired of, albums we swore were timeless but that now make us cringe when we listen to them. (”Hysteria” anyone?)

But what about the albums that we initially dismiss after a listen or two but that somehow draw us back in after a while? Which albums have gotten better with time?

Kings of Leon’s debut “Youth and Young Manhood” was lost on me for about two years before it grabbed on. And I’m so glad it did.

Lt. Dan - Forrest Gump’s 1st Mate and one mean bass player

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Ryan Woodard

I noticed a comment on the live music thread below that intrigued me. That is, that the Lt. Dan Band is playing at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Here is the comment that was posted:

“The Lt. Dan Band (Gary Sinise from “Forrest Gump”) will be performing at the base theater on 1 Feb. Doors open at 4 PM, concert starts at 5. No tickets, first come, first served. Visitors need to be vouched on by an AF sponsor, so if you’ve got friends out here, call them up and make plans for an evening of music and entertainment.”

Has anyone else heard about this? Anyone going? I sent an email to the Ellsworth public affairs office in an attempt to confirm that the show is indeed occurring. I will put the word out as soon as I hear something concrete.

It sounds like this could be an interesting show to attend, although admission appears as though it may be somewhat restricted. I had not heard of this band so I did a little reading. Apparently the group, organized by bass player Sinise, is a cover-heavy jam/rock band that enjoys playing for troops. Most people are probably familiar with Sinise, largely because of the memorable role he played in “Forrest Gump.”

Apparently he plays a wicked bass as well.
