Howdy!

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

I’m a Texas import with rather eclectic musical taste and everything from 2Pac to Widespread Panic in my ipod. I appreciate just about everything live with the exception of some of the new country/pop music but I love the jam bands.

My favorite band is a group of Houston friends that call themselves Moses Guest. They’ve even written a song about me. My favorite album of theirs is “Guest Motel” from 2004. They should have a new album out later this year and I’m trying to get them to come to South Dakota next summer. Check out their sound at www.mosesguest.com.

The last five albums that I’ve listened to are:

1) “Alcohol & Salvation,” Carolyn Wonderland & the Imperial Monkeys (www.carolynwonderland.com), 2005, also from Houston but they often play at the Sturgis Rally

2) “Sixteen Stone,” Bush, 1994

3) “Dire Straits,” Dire Straits, 1978, remastered in 2000

4) “The Trinity Session,” Cowboy Junkies, 1988

5) “Live,” Sister 7 (www.sister7.com), 2001, again from Houston but no longer together

One of my goals with this blog is to discover more local Black Hills bands, so if you’re in a band or know of a good one, drop me a line and I’ll catch a show.

I received an interesting e-mail today and thought it might spark some discussion.

New York — The nominations for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum were announced today. The nine nominees will be sent to over 500 voters, and five will be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame at the annual induction ceremony on March 12, 2007 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. …

The nine nominees for 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are: Chic, The Dave Clark Five, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., The Ronettes, Patti Smith, The Stooges, Joe Tex, and Van Halen.

Which five artists do you think should receive the honor? I vote for The Dave Clark Five, Patti Smith and The Stooges for sure, but I haven’t made up my mind on the rest yet.

Anybody you think shouldn’t be on the list?

Want to get into the whole “Van Hagar” debate?

Welcome to Feedback & Distortion! I’m Troy McClure. You might remember me from such newspaper columns as… wait, let’s start that over.

I’m Ruth Milne, one of the four bloggers running this joint. I’ve been writing a column on local music, profiling one band a month, for about two years. (I also write obituaries, but that shouldn’t come up much here.)

You can expect my posts to focus mostly on local music and events. My taste runs to just about every genre; from the hardcore metal of NoneTheLess to the acoustic folk of Amanda Conway, it’s all my style.

I love live music, and I plan to post photos of shows I go to. For now, I only have one, and I’m including it mostly to try out this whole “posting photos” feature here.

At a recent punk show at The Retired Enlisted Association, a sign was erected showing kids where to enter for the show because it was the first one held at that venue. Of course, some smart-aleck erased two letters from the sign:

And, of course, that show — featuring the Hudson Falcons as well as a few local bands — was excellent.

Keeping with today’s theme, the last five albums I listened to are:

1. Eric Bachmann, “To the Races”

2. The Animals, “Absolute Animals 1964-1968″

3. The Weather Machines, “The Sound of Pseudoscience”

4. Two Gallants, “What the Toll Tells”

5. Elvis Costello, “When I Was Cruel”

And now, dear reader, it’s your turn to introduce yourself. Who are you, and what would you like to see blogged about here?

P.S. Do take a look at our commenting guidelines.

Welcome, everyone, to Feedback & Distortion, the Rapid City Journal’s music blog.

I’d kind of like to think that with more than 11 years of reviewing music for the dead-tree version of the Journal, I might not have to introduce myself here. But on the off chance that my reputation doesn’t precede me (and I know it doesn’t), here you go: I’ve covered music in the Black Hills since 1995. My wife tells me that I’m a music snob, and I don’t argue with her, at least about that. I doubt there’s a genre that doesn’t have something I’ll listen to, but mostly I like the rock and roll.

I like the idea of a music blog because some people are nearly as fervent with their musical preferences as others are with their religious or political beliefs. But when people discuss or argue about their music, they usually don’t take the criticism personally, and an enlightening philosophical exchange can be had by all. And of course, that’s one of the goals my blog colleagues and I have here at Feedback & Distortion.

So, in the interest of sparking discussion, here are the last five albums I’ve listened to. Have at them:

Beck – “The Information”

John Coltrane – “A Love Supreme”

Kasey Chambers – “The Captain”

John Mayer – “Continuum”

Led Zeppelin – “Box Set Disc 2”
