An Independant Voice
Welcome to my new blog.
Â
I don’t know everything about film. But I do have some interesting questions about films, film in general and our human responses to film. And I do know some people who know a lot more than I do – about a lot of things.
Â
I belong to a group called the Voices of the Heartland Film Society. I think we originally all got together more than 5 years ago to try and get Dennis Kucinich elected in the primary. After that didn’t happen we all wanted to continue to meet and discuss important matters, so we started watching films and talking about them.  Â
Â
This is was fun. But wouldn’t it be more fun if we showed our great movie finds to many more people and bring other Voices into the conversation?Â
Â
Yes. It was. So the two people who have pretty much kept us going over the years did this amazing thing and figured out how to show movies at the Elks Theatre.Â
Â
The Elks Theatre, home of the biggest screen in South Dakota, is our venue. We love this place!

ooh, I love going to the movies that you guys show at the Elks… and Dennis Kucinich is my favorite. Keep up the good work. I was wondering how you pick the movies you show. Do you take suggestions?

This is so cool. The Black Hills have certainly needed a truly independent voice, and there are so many great new thought-provoking films coming out, it’s good to have a chance to see and discuss them with other folks who aren’t satisfied with the usual fare. I’ll be there!

Hey there Caitlin!
Nice to hear from a movie fan, and a Kucinich fan! Wow we have so much in common.
We pick movies by having 6 or 8 people lock themselves in a padded room, (with very good food :)) and go through pages of suggestions by those of us in the room and suggestions from film goers, and hopefully suggestions made by folks on the blog! Then we assign titles to months, mostly based on whim or whimsey. Like this month we are featuring “T-shirt Travels” as holiday fare. But more about that later.
Febuary-March we tend to go really dark, or conversely really happy.
Do you have a suggestion to make for the committee?
Thanks for the comment. Keep checking back!

Hello Ace, film lover.
I, too, think there are a great many films we never get the chance to see here, let alone talk about with others. This film group not only brings film that we think will be interesting, but ones that we want to talk about, and hopefully others will want to talk about. The leaders of our group almost always arrange a person to lead the discussion. This adds so much to the whole experience.
Thanks for adding your voice. See you at the theatre,
Deirdre

Congratulations to you! No doubt it will be a delicious ride.
“Nowhere in Africa,” German, w/subtitles.
The film tells the story of a young couple from an affluent Jewish family, whose exile to Kenya from Germany during wartime persecution, is shaped by loneliness, adaptation, individual and community growth.
An isolated farm, where the deserts of Earth seem merciful compared to those created in the soul, is a girl’s paradise, a lawyer’s prison, a woman’s epiphany, an African’s home.
Beautifully shot and acted, this film delights.

I hear that the Voices of the Heartland are going to be showing an amazing film this month about Bela Fleck banjoing in Africa. Any truth to that?
