A killer in our midst?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

OK, that might be a little harsh, but not by too much.

Authorities are on the lookout for an Alabama man who is a person of interest in the double homicide death of his parents.

Adrian Edward Glass is apparently in the area. We know this because he used his debit card at a store in Piedmont. He is supposedly driving a red quad cab Tacoma pickup with tinted windows and may be armed. He is considered dangerous.

More on this later at www.rapidcityjournal.com.

Scanner traffic: Let’s hope nobody reports the newsroom

Monday, July 20th, 2009

My favorite scanner call in a while came across today for the Hill City. Dispatch noted that they had just got a call from a reporting party that they had a subject that “was … just … not right.”

I could insert some snide comment about Hill City, but working here in the newsroom, the old addage about glass houses comes to mind almost immediately.

Busy day for storm chasers

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Conditions were ripe for tornadoes and other forms of destructive weather on Monday, and stormchasers were busy filling up the scanner chatter through most of the afternoon.

While there were only a couple of points where the spotters were able to see the swirl of dirt forming on the ground, they got to see plenty of funnel clouds, as well as baseball sized hail and uprooted trees.

And don’t forget the lightning, which apprently sparked a blaze somewhere around Philip.

The best thing for us in the newsroom: No fear of denting our vehicles chasing super dark storm clouds — or worse.

Scanner traffic: Kickin’ ‘em when they’re down

Friday, June 19th, 2009

One of the better ones we’ve heard in a while, which is saying something considering the call about the cowboy and the 1880s Train just today.

Apparently, a number of bushes and shrubs were stolen from a home being foreclosed upon by a near neighbor. I don’t know if the current residents of the home are around, but that’s simply brutal.

With the evidence just a few houses away, it sounds as if the police may be able to make a case without too much trouble — that is, granted they can make a positive ID on the stolen landscape.

Scanner traffic: A cowboy, a train and …

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Fascinating scanner traffic this morning out of the central Hills. Apparently, someone in full cowboy gear either rode up on horseback or ran up alongside the old 1880 Train between Hill City and Keystone and began firing his six shooters into the air.

Breathe easy, though. There were no real bullets in the guns and nobody was injured in this unauthorized re-enactment of an Old West train robbery. Still, charges could be pending.

We hope to have something for the home page later today.

UPDATE: It doesn’t look like actual news was committed here. Apparently, the cowboy was part of a local church camp that was putting on a show for the campgoers a little too close to the tracks. Obviously, it was simply too good to be true!

Transformer sparks grass fire in West Rapid

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Scanner traffic a little after 10 a.m. A transformer in west Rapid City over has blown and started a small grass fire.

The person who called it in said it was moving toward homes in the area. Those first on the scene, though, say the fire is small. They also, note, though, that there are power lines in the area, that could complicate matters slightly.

Remarkably, I heard on the radio the other day that we are slightly below our precip mark for the month. Could this be a more active fire season than last year’s non-existent one? Odds are — yes.
