Wine on the mind
By Barbara Soderlin
Today I’ve been talking to everyone I can get ahold of who is involved in the wine business for a story my editor suggested on wine sales. Seems the recession hasn’t put much of a damper on the business.
Fun fact: South Dakota now produces 300,000 bottles of wine a year.
This summer a second winery opened in Hill City and the Wine Rack is now open at Sheridan Lake Road and Catron Boulevard, an intersection already home to a liquor store and a wine bar. Retailers say sales have been strong but people haven’t been splurging on the really expensive bottles.
Have you curtailed your wine consumption? I think I’ve been doing like a lot of people, just buying cheaper wine.

I haven’t curtailed. The FTC that used to be Albertson’s used to be great for wine, but I’m not sure what the wine-o-phobe who’s in charge now is thinking. That nice lady that used to be there was helpful and knew her wine, now I’m not sure they even know what wine is. Guess it’s good we have some other places to choose from now.

You can always find a good bottle of wine for $20+. The fun part for me and my wife has always been to find that $5 or $10 gem. We certainly aren’t buying cheaper win than we did two years ago, but that is just our habit.

Vino 100 always has reasonable prices and you can find wines there that you can’t find anywhere else. I am from Idaho and love my Idaho Wine, St Chapelle. I asked for it everywhere, and no one ever had it. But Vino 100 does! And many more! The staff is friendly, they have wine tasting and it is a lovely little place to spend an hour of your precious free time.
(No I don’t work there and am not friends with the owner…just a happy customer.)

That “other liquor store” on Sheridan Lake Road has a name it’s Autumn Hill Liquors, they have one of the nicest displays of wine in the hills, and they have St Chapelle too!
