    Hi Linda,
Congratulations on a job well done. Having attended most of the events at the opening, I join with all others in wishing you and your staff a long rest and a big hug. The place looks great, the shows well hung and displayed, the work outstanding and well curated by Mary Maxon. I hope that more and more people, not usually moved by art in the area, will attend more events and classes offered by the new Dahl Art Center.

Thanks Don–We had over 800 people at the opening on Saturday and close to 500 come through on Sunday. Thanks for your kind words.

It will be fun to see what the community makes possible in this great new public building! So much potential!!

The Dahl is indeed a wonderful facility and a marvelous accomplishment for Linda Anderson and all of her staff. Congratulations!!

Now, we all need to work to awaken the Governor and the Legislature to the fact that elimination of the Division of Arts would be a crushing blow to individuals and groups who use the Dahl. Reductions are okay, but total elimination is an act of panic and shortsightedness that will hurt South Dakota in the long run. Here is what I wrote to my Senator and Representatives:

I urge you to speak against and vote against the elimination of the Division of Arts. I think a reduction in the appropriation is acceptable, but not total elimination. Once something like the Division of Arts is gone, it probably won’t come back. This is a horrible result for the State of South Dakota. Arts enrich our lives, and enhance our state. More importantly, they also contribute economically. This has been shown in study after study, most recently in a study done for the Rapid City Arts Council that helped construct the wonderful Dahl Arts Center. That center will suffer greatly, and its usage will diminish (a tragedy for the city) without the kind of assistance that the Division of Arts provides to performing and visual artists who use the Dahl. Please ensure that the Division of Arts shares in the belt-tightening, instead of being totally eliminated.

The new Dahl is excellent! I was very impressed with my recent visit. I recently moved back to South Dakota, and I can see the Dahl will be my haven of escape for the fine arts. I hope there are plans to exhibit a selection of internationl modern art. South Dakota is need of its own MOCA, MOMA, GETTY, TATE…. anyways keep pushing forward.
