Post 22 Sweeps Mitchell on Friday Night in Rapid City

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Post 22 was all about business in these two games.

I am new to covering ball in Rapid City and I have noticed a few positive things that I did not always see watching high school ball in Wisconsin.
Let’s talk about Hustle:
The hustle on and off the field is amazing. I even noticed a few guys strike out and instead of flipping their helmet off and walking towards their position, they put the bat and helmet down and quickly went into a jog out to their positions. Every inning the Rapid City Post 22 boys sprint out to their positions and never let up. You can tell they respect the game.

I am going to take this opportunity to discuss a mild blunder I noticed in the second game tonight.
Understanding The Infield Fly Rule.

When the infield fly rule is called out by an umpire and “you” are on first or second base you do not have to run. The batter is automatically out if they drop the ball or not. In the bottom of the first with runners on first and second with nobody out a pop fly that started in the infield slowly drifted to the outfield grass. The umpire signaled and yelled “infield fly, batters out.” Then, the ball dropped. The runner on second base noticed that and took off for third, but he was a dead duck and out rather easily. It is my assumption that the runner took off because he felt he “had” to run. That runner could’ve stayed put at second base since the batter was out, eliminating the force play at third.

Post 22 loses starting centerfielder

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

In the bottom of the fifth inning with no body out, Parker Sullivan saw a pitch get away from Sturgis’ catcher so he attempted to score the winning run on the wild pitch.

Here is where things went wrong…

Parker not only made the first out of the inning at home, breaking one of baseball’s cardinal rules, he slid head first into home and into the catcher’s shin guards. His left ring finger snapped immediately and it was obvious that it was broken.

What can youngsters learn from this? Well, never make the first out of an inning at third base or home and never, never, never slide head first into home. Go hard, but go feet first, limiting  the possibility of breaking fingers, a hand, or a wrist in the process.

It is unknown how much time Sullivan will miss with this injury.

Spearfish easily sweeps past Belle Fourche

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Spearfish Post 164 put together all three phases of the game Tuesday night in a double-header sweep of Belle Fourche, 11-1, and 15-0.
Post 164 starting pitching gave up only five hits and one run in the twin bill. In the opener Bryce Lewis threw a two-hitter going all six innings for the win. He struck out seven while walking only two. In the nightcap Jordan Louks tossed a three-hitter and a shutout.
Spearfish was also on top of their game on the defensive end committing only one error in the two games and made several outstanding plays. The play of the day came from Justin Kemp at shortstop when he bare-handed a ground ball and threw to first while falling for the out.
Offensively, Spearfish scored 26 runs, and hammered out 17 hits. Kemp had two hits in both games and scored four runs, while Allen Hemeyer had five RBI in game one along with a three-run homerun. In the second game Kyle Lewis knocked in four runs and had two doubles.

Post 22 brings back a veteran team in 2009 (orginally posted May 8th on the sports blog)

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Rapid City Post 22 returns five of eight position players and two of their top three starting pitchers off last year’s squad which finished third in the state with a record of 34-31.
Post 22 was under .500 late in the regular season last year with a young team before going on to win the region 3A title over Rapid City Post 320. But this year a young team has turned into a team of veterans and will be seeking Post 22’s 33rd state title in 46 years under head coach Dave Ploof.
The hard hats return their ace pitcher Kolton Emery and make no mistake he’s a very talented young pitcher. He can locate his fastball with almost pin point accuracy while moving it around the strike zone well. The number one also has a nasty hook, which gives opposing hitter’s a fits. Emery finished 2008 with a 9-6 record and an ERA of 2.99. He fanned 91 batters last season in 93.1 innings pitched and only walked 11 all season. If he can get the run support, he has a chance to beat anyone on the Post 22 schedule and that includes national tournaments.
The probable no. 2 starter for the hard hats will most likely be J.J. Johnson. He surprised many last year by going 7-2 with the lowest ERA on the staff at 2.74, including wins over Post 320 in the region 3A championship game and a victory over Parkston in the state tournament. Johnson doesn’t have overpowering stuff. However, is a competitor who knows how to pitch especially in big games.
This is where the question mark’s come in for the Post 22 pitching staff. Who will be the no. 3 and no. 4 starters come post season time will be crucial to Rapid City’s success. They are looking at a group of about eight pitchers to fill the two starting spots and the rest will be in the bullpen. Some of the prospects include Jon Haas, Brad Horan, Ethan Jarding, John Jarding, and Thane Lees.
As far as the lineup goes it will be interesting to see where coach Ploof has everyone fitting in. The five returning starters are Dana Hill at catcher, Jarrett Jensen at third base, Jake Bohne at first base, Parker Sullivan in centerfield, and Kolton Emery who platooned at shortstop, third base, and the left field.
Parker Sullivan will be the leadoff batter again this year after hitting .347 a year ago, and making the Rapid City Journal’s all-state squad. He led the hard hats with 51 runs scored last year, and has a knack for coming up with timely hits. He also had 49 walks, so he’s on base a lot. The one thing I would like to see more out of the leadoff hitter this year is fewer strike outs, and more stolen bases.
The no. 2, 3, and 5 hitters are missing off last year’s squad. Sam Wolff and Brock Estes decided to play summer league baseball in Las Vegas, forgoing their senior seasons. Wolff led the team in hitting (.446), extra base hits (28) and RBI’s (48) a year ago. So shortstop and the no.3 hole will be a major one to fill. Wolff was also the no. 2 pitcher on the staff going 7-5 with a 4.94 ERA. Estes hit .331 in the no. 5 hole.
Jordan Mette (second base) and Steven Ficken (right field) are the other position players missing from 2008 to graduation. Mette hit in the no. 2 spot and had a .351 average. Ficken hit .288 with 15 doubles.
Who will fill the crucial spots at second, shortstop, right field and left field? Right now it looks like Kolton Emery will fill in at short when he’s not pitching, but consider his arm will need a rest from time to time, so look for Donte Bledsoe off last year’s Split Squad to fill in when Emery’s on the mound or needs a rest. Bledsoe led the Bullets and Split Squad in hitting and he will also play second base. Emery hit .301 last year with eight doubles, and 21 RBI. Justin Mette (up from the Split Squad) is also a prospect in the middle infield.
In the outfield Ploof is looking at five players to fill two spots- Kyle Singer, Taylor Muhlbeier, Tanner Bisgaard, Jordan Carlson, and Brock Thomas.
Other prospects up from the Split Squad are Reece Steckler and Robert Jahner which will battle for time at first base and the designated hitter spot.
Catcher Dana Hill will most likely bat in the no. 4 spot again this year after hitting .327 with 30 RBI last season. In 2008, Hill handled a young pitching staff well from behind the dish. He blocks the ball well, and he throws out runners with a strong arm and accuracy. Hill surprised many last year earning the starting spot and hit better than expected but this year if Post 22 is going to score more runs he is going to have to hit well with runners in scoring position and get more extra base hits.
Jarrett Jensen really came on at the end of last season both at the plate and in the field. Jensen hit .327 and led the team in home runs with four. He isn’t the most imposing figure, but his bat really has some pop. He could fit in nicely at the top of the Rapid City lineup and could be a key in getting some needed RBI’s and should hit for even more power with a year under his belt.
Jake Bohne will get the nod at first base again this season. The now 16-year old is as naturally gifted as anyone on the Post 22 team. The lefty should really come into his own this year at the plate and in the field. He is the kind of hitter that hits the ball hard consistently. Look for him to be hitting gaps and driving in a lot of runs in 2009.
As a team Post 22 should compete for a state title. But it isn’t close to a given. South Dakota has some quality teams all across the state including defending state champions Aberdeen, 2008 runner-up Mitchell, Watertown, Sioux Falls East, Sioux Falls West and more.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Post 22 in a national regional this year, but what they do beyond will largely depend on what pitching (especially no. 3 and 4 starters and bullpen) and defense. Also pay special attention to the second base and shortstop positions. Good teams are always strong up the middle.

Post 22 goes 1-2 over weekend series versus Cheyenne

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Post 22 head coach Dave Ploof knew the hard hats were going to face an early season test against Cheyenne Post 6.
Cheyenne has won seven of the last eight Wyoming state championships and came into the weekend with a record of 4-0. If pitching wins championships Post 6 should be in good shape in Wyoming. Over the weekend their starting pitching went 16 and 1/3 innings pitched giving up only six earned runs and 11 hits against a potent Post 22 lineup.
Here are a few highlights from the weekend.
In game one Post 6 starting pitcher Aaron Smith went all seven innings scattering four hits as Cheyenne defeated Post 22 6-3. Post 22 committed their 15th and 16th errors of the season in the opener. Concerning? Somewhat. The lineup is still being hashed out and it’s early. If the hard hats are still committing that many errors in June and July then it will be very concerning.
The night cap on Saturday was a classic pitcher’s duel. Post 6’s Myles McVeigh battled Post 22 ace Kolton Emery pitch for pitch, inning for inning. McVeigh went 5 and 1/3 innings giving up one run and scattering five hits. While Emery, the hard luck loser, went all seven innings giving up only four hits and one earned run. It was Cheyenne’s Luke Haugh’s bloop single in the sixth which scored an unearned run that ended up being the difference in the game. Post 6 won the game 2-1 improving to 6-0 on the season.
The single game at noon on Sunday was something Post 22 will be able to build on. They fought back from a 4-1 deficit to win the game 6-5. A Post 22 error in the sixth scored an unearned run and put them behind 5-4, but they again battled back. In the bottom of the last inning Post 22 tied the game on a throwing error, and then won the game with two outs and the bases loaded when first baseman Jake Bohne singled back up the box off the Cheyenne pitcher.
Post 22 will face Scottsbluff, Neb. in a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 5 p.m. at Fitzgerald Stadium.

Early season test for Post 22 this weekend

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Rapid City Post 22 opens up a three-game series against Cheyenne Post 6 this weekend at Fitzgerald Stadium. Saturday night they have a double-header scheduled for at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday they will play a single game at noon.

Cheyenne is a perennial powerhouse in the state of Wyoming and they are off to a good start again this year at 4-0. So it will be a battle of the unbeaten’s as Post 22 comes into the game at 3-0.

Post 22 has started the season with hot bats scoring 27 runs in their first three games. The hard hats have been led offensively by Kolton Emery who is 7-for-9 with 8 RBI, Dana Hill (7-for-11), and Parker Sullivan (7-for-11, two homeruns, 15 total bases).
